The Team
Richard M. Greenwald
PhD, President / Co-Founder
Richard M. Greenwald, PhD, founder and President, is an entrepreneur and biomedical engineer with over 15 years of experience in research and development in sports and orthopedic biomechanics.
Dr. Greenwald has been directly involved in product development for numerous biofeedback and data acquisition products for the medical and rehabilitation industries. He has received multiple awards from the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, and Department of Defense for product development through the Small Business Innovation Program (SBIR). He co-founded iWalk, Inc. (Cambridge, MA) with Hugh Herr, PhD, to commercialize novel robotic prosthetic technologies, was CEO of iWalk from 2006-2009, and now serves on iWalk’s board. Dr. Greenwald previously started and managed the US Division: Orthopedics, Sports, and Rehabilitation, for TÜV Product Service, a multinational firm specializing in product testing and regulatory certification of products for sale in the European Union. He currently serves on the Advisory Board for the National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research at NIH, and is President of the International Society for Skiing Safety.
He is an Associate Professor (adjunct) at Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College and a Research Affiliate in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Dr. Greenwald is currently directing five federally funded research and development projects at Simbex.
Jeffrey J. Chu
Vice President of Engineering
Jeffrey J. Chu blends a long history of applied research and product development in exercise science, sports and orthopedics to his position as Director of Engineering. His innovative algorithms based on neural networks, fuzzy logic, and advanced optimization techniques, along with a strong balance of electronic design, material selection, and software systems integration, keep the Simbex team driving toward new product solutions. Jeff has worked for sports product development companies ranging from Nike to New Balance and later Saucony, where he was responsible for developing advance concept motion control and shock attenuation technologies.
Joshua R. Nelson
Program Manager of TREAT
Joshua Nelson is an Administrator and Multi-media developer who specializes in federal grant administration, marketing, web development and 3d animation. He worked previously as Administrative Director at the Interactive Media Lab at Dartmouth Medical School, and has lectured and taught 3d and character animation techniques at Dartmouth College. Other previous experience includes work in the public health sector as Animation Director for Dr. C. Everett Koop at the C. Everett Koop Institute. Joshua has been integral in creating and commercializing multiple software products which are today being used to train and educate our nations nurses, doctors, first responders (EMT, fire fighters and law enforcement) and medical students. At Simbex, Joshua is Program Manager for the Center for Translation of Rehabilitation Engineering Advances and Technology (TREAT). Here he oversees two engineers and supervises and teaches commercialization techniques to rehabilitation clinicians, engineers and faculty throughout North America.
Jonathan G. Beckwith
Director of Research
Jonathan G. Beckwith is a biomechanist who specializes in the areas of impact attenuation, biometric measurements and human-machine interface design. As Director of Research, Jonathan currently oversees the basic and applied research conducted by Simbex which includes several projects currently funded by the NIH, CDC, DOD, and NOCSAE. Jonathan has a broad background in mechanical engineering that includes automotive design, automation and control of haptic feedback devices, and development of assistive technology. By combining this development experience with his practical approach to research, Jonathan is uniquely adept at bridging the gap between the theoretical sciences and technical development.
