SIMBEX AWARDED A SMALL BUSINSESS INNOVATION RESEARCH AWARD FOR LOW-COST HEAD IMPACT ALERT SYSTEM
Lebanon, NH- March 19, 2009 - Research and product development firm Simbex was awarded a Small
Business Innovation Research (SBIR) award from the National Institutes of Health for development
of a low-cost head impact alert system, HitAlert™, for use in helmeted sports. Principal
Investigator Jeff Chu, Vice President of Engineering at Simbex, will lead the development
of this novel and low cost approach to monitoring head impacts that builds upon Simbex's
successful Head Impact Telemetry (HIT) System.
"Simbex developed a new brain injury tolerance measure, HITsp, based on what we've learned
from analyzing over 1 million recorded head impacts in football, hockey, soccer, winter
sports, equestrian and boxing. The HitAlert system developed in this new program incorporates
HITsp in a more compact and cost-effective system for sideline monitoring of head impacts
that may be associated with concussions", said Chu. HitAlert expands the market for helmets
at all levels of play, including youth sports, by making the technology available at a
reasonable price point. This next-generation of head impact monitoring comes as public
awareness regarding concussion injury has grown dramatically.
HitAlert™ complements and expands the HIT System technology product line, which is sold
commercially as Sideline Response System™ and Revolution HITS IQ™ by industry powerhouse
Riddell. "HitAlert measures how often, how hard, and where on the head a player is
impacted, and maintains a time-history of recent impacts as well. It provides sideline
personnel with critical information about the player's head impact history that can help
guide their clinical decisions on the field", commented co-investigator and Simbex founder
and President Richard Greenwald, PhD.
Simbex maintains the largest database of head impacts in helmeted sports, and uses that
data to develop new measures for concussion injury. HIT System technology is used to better
understand the relationship between head impacts and clinical outcomes related to concussion
as part of an ongoing five-year project funded by the National Center for Medical
Rehabilitation Research within the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development
at the National Institutes of Health. Partners in this NIH study include Dartmouth Medical
School Departments of Psychiatry and Pediatric Neurosurgery, Dartmouth Athletics, Rhode
Island Hospital Department of Orthopaedics, Brown University Dept of Athletics, Virginia
Tech Department of Biomedical Engineering and Department of Athletics, and Virginia College
of Osteopathic Medicine.
